As the year marking the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Bauhaus, 2009 is an appropriate year for an exhibition dedicated to the examination of the social networks of the Bauhaus movement. In preparation for this project, biographical details of all of the members of the Bauhaus will be systematically structured and entered into an online database. The impressive volume of information resulting from this effort will then be presented within an illuminated 4x4meter cube at the Bauhaus University in Weimar.

The exhibition then becomes an immersive yet highly-structured digital archive rich with historical details. Complex interrelationships will be made more accessible through the implementation of an innovative graphical interface. All visualizations of the complex network are drawn directly from the research database and presented in an intuitive computer-generated form. At an interactive digital tabletop, spectators can furthermore examine individual parts of the greater network in more detail.

Daniel Widrig studied architecture in Germany and the UK. After graduating from the Architectural Association in London with a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urbanism in 2006 , he joined Zaha Hadid Architects where he worked on several major international projects. Since establishing his own studio in London, Widrig has been working on architectural concepts, products, objects and experimental furniture editions. His work has won several awards such as the FEIDAD Merit Award 2006, the Swiss Arts Award 2007. In 2008 Daniel Widrig won the Rome Prize. He is currently artist in residence at the German Academy, Villa Massimo in Rome.

Below are a few examples of Widrig’s investigation into fashion art. The two images above are from the Escapism series (2010/11), shown at the Paris Fashion Week with Iris van Herpen and MGX. Within the Sabin+Jones LabStudio, architects, mathematicians, materials scientists and cell biologists are actively collaborating to develop, analyze and abstract dynamic, biological systems through the generation and design of new tools. These new approaches for modeling complexity and visualizing large datasets are subsequently applied to both architectural and biomedical research and design.

there will be 2 sets of workshops at sabanci university in july on how to visualize scientific data and information.

How can we make sense of the information that surrounds us in today’s complex world? How can we make explanations of the natural and the man-made world; give visual expression to otherwise invisible information; help ease complex tasks; or help people find their way. How can we bring order to rich databases as well as the built environment using elements of visual communication?

Designers achieve these tasks by exploring the nature of information. They interpret and communicate information using the same elements they use in creating aesthetic pleasure, that is, lines, shapes, and colors — but with their added knowledge of the processes that help human cognition.

please check the workshop website for further information. any scientist who has an idea to visualize in any subject (computer science, mechanics, biology, chemistry, physics, etc..) or any designer who likes to work on information design, information visualization and infographics are welcome. this will be a collaborated event so there will be lots of group work and hopefully lots of nice outcomes.
